Swedish police kill suspect after knife rampage



Police in Sweden have shot and killed a knife-wielding man after he allegedly stabbed three people, including an elderly woman who died from her injuries.Police say the victims were stabbed on Sunday morning in different locations in the southwestern town of Varberg.Two men who were attacked survived, but the woman, in her mid-80s, died from her injuries.Police say they shot the suspect when he refused to put down his knife, even after they fired warning shots.He died after being taken to a local hospital.The man was not identified but police said he was born in 1989.The motive for the rampage was not immediately clear.Chef Knives Can Make Your Cooking Easier  A man who carjacked a vehicle at knife-point and ordered the driver to speed away from police in Newcastle remains on the run, with police warning members of the public that he is dangerous and should not be approached.The man, thought to be aged in his 20s, allegedly held a knife to the throat of a male motorist and told him to drive his Toyota LandCruiser about 10 kilometres along the New England Highway before the driver managed to jump free from his vehicle when he slowed at a pedestrian crossing.

The carjacker sped away in the stolen vehicle, and has not been seen since. He had earlier crashed into and elderly couple's car and attempted to carjack a number of other vehicles.Police say officers from the highway patrol first attempted to stop the motorist, who has a fair and freckled complexion with short red hair, on Main Road at Jesmond just after 3.30pm on Sunday.The man initially pulled his Honda Prelude over to the side of the road, but police allege he then accelerated away when officers tried to approach to him.The officers chased the man north onto the Pacific Highway and into Hexham, where the Honda allegedly performed a U-turn into north-bound traffic and hit another vehicle.The elderly man and woman in that vehicle were not seriously injured.Police say the Honda then sped south along the Pacific Highway before crashing into scrub by the side of the highway.An off-duty police officer who had seen the first crash had followed the Honda and attempted to arrest the driver, who allegedly pulled out a knife and broke free.Police say the man ran across four lanes of traffic on the Pacific Highway and attempted to stop a number of north-bound vehicles, before he finally waved down a Toyota LandCruiser.
