Had one of us left a pot to char on the stove
"You forgot your cell phone," said my mother, "and you forgot the laundry room key. What do you think you are, 91 years old?"Just then, we smelled smoke, and my mother and I both froze. From the particular fragrance carbonized green beans it could mean only one thing: scorched supper. Had one of us left a pot to char on the stove? We approached the cooking appliances with trepidation. Would the blackened state of the kitchen confirm that our minds were fading? However, the stove sat sparkling clean. Not a pot was on it. In fact, the only thing we'd forgotten to do was start dinner.I opened the apartment door to look out. The smoke was pretty thick, but I could see down the hallway. A teenager stood at the end, After pregnancy women want to tighten up swinging the fire door to let in fresh air."What happened?" I asked."My mom burned the dinner," he shrugged. "You'd think she wouldn't do it on her 40th birthday."Roni Bushari, president of Toronto-based RECAP Investments Inc., travels regularly to Costa Rica and Honduras where he has several real estate projects in the works. He relies on a premium credit card with emergency medical insurance to protect him in the event of a health issue.
It means he doesn't have to think about getting trip insurance every time, he says. And it comes with other benefits."I collect lots of points because I travel so much, so every year we have a family trip," he says. "And it covers my car insurance as well if I have an accident."But will it cover him in the event he must be airlifted home for surgery? Bushari isn't sure. Does it cover employees if he books the travel for them? Again, he doesn't know.Allison Wallace, a spokesperson for Flight Centre, says Bushari is in the majority in that most entrepreneurs take only a cursory look at the insurance policies they rely on to protect them when they cross borders. "Smaller organizations don't usually have a dedicated travel planner," she says. "And it is true of most travellers that the assumptions they have about what they're covered for are usually wrong."That is a problem, points out Wendy Hope, vice-president of external relations for the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA), because whether you're travelling outside of Canada - or even within our borders provincial insurance is limited.
